Off and running

It's a new marking period and we're off to a great start! Students have been reading Lord of the Flies for about a week and the first quiz is Monday over Ch. 1-3. I allow some time in class for reading, but as a rule, schedule their own reading homework. As always, I offer kids a number of reading strategies to help them understand their reading. Here's what we've talked about and worked on in class so far:
student need to

  • Use study questions pre- (to guide reading) and post-reading (to check for understanding) (link)
  • Complete a double-entry response each week (link)
  • Begin character analysis with the 'Changing Characters' strategy (link)
I've also introduced this marking period's PBL which is one of my favorite. Students will create a character campaign and present it to class (link). For now, they're just starting to plan with their teams, which they chose this time around. Monday will be their first team meeting and I can't wait to see what they will create!
