Write on!

Yesterday students had an in-class write on Lord of the Flies.  The purpose was two-fold: to assess how well students are making inferences in the novel and to assess their writing skills. (And, maybe in some cases, to see if they're even reading the novel!) I've graded two classes already, hours 2 and 3, and I have seen writing from basic to advanced. I'll use a student model essay next week to help students focus on the question, "What makes good writing."  Here's a link on how parents can help their teens become better writers (link).

Students will also be assigned an essay next Wednesday which they can draft in the computer lab on Thursday. Revisions will be done at home and the final essay is due on 12/21 before break. (And I should probably ask myself if I'm crazy, giving myself Winter Break homework!)

Improving reading and writing skills takes practice, practice, and more practice. Often kids want the easy way out (I was just asked this week why we don't read aloud 'popcorn' style because it was "easier"!) and it's up to parents and teacher to encourage them to stretch and grow. Today was our Self-Selected Reading day--we started this at the beginning of the year on Fridays and students should finish at least one book by January 7. Be sure your teen is reading this weekend!
