Because we've finished the play, students can finally start working with some of the big ideas that were presented. Today we talked a bit about the difference between the end of Lorraine Hansberry's Act III and the end of the production we watched in class. After watching Walter Lee's big transformation in Act III, we'll also consider (again!) whether or not the Youngers should have taken Lindner's money--I'm guessing some opinions have changed, especially after seeing Walter's anguish played out.
Finally (and perhaps most importantly) students will look at the play through the lens of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. This is good preparation for this unit's PBL. I also collected Writer's Notebooks today and will enter the grades by Monday. And speaking of Mondays--we've only three to go until the end of the year!
