To summarize ...

As the ACT approaches and the students get closer to their senior year and college, I am pushing them to read difficult text more quickly and make some last minute adjustments to their writing. This week I went back to a strategy we used at the beginning of the year called 'guided highlighting'. I read an article paragraph-by-paragraph at a pretty good pace; after each paragraph I give students a specific details to search for and highlight--these are the main ideas. Today students were asked to write a summary based on their highlighting. This will be a great way for me to see how well students read and write. Next week's summary will probably be entered as an assessment grade. Reading aloud and having students follow is a good way for them to push themselves to pick up their pace.

Students also had the option of reading Fahrenheit 451--and post questions they have about Part I to a Moodle forum.
