This year, all ELA teachers at CPHS agreed to use ACT-like reading passages for our mid-term and semester exams. Our School Improvement focus is reading and writing. We already compile our students' writing scores and track them to see growth, but we needed to assess kids' reading skills as well. Mrs. Steffes and I had already designated our mid-term exam as the
This I Believe essay--but now we can get back in sync with the rest of the department.
Students will read 3 passages (ACT length) and answer 10 questions on each. The questions range from comprehension to author's purpose to inference. Each week we've focused on close reading with our Article of the Week--students have practiced strategies that should improve their reading skills. We will continue this next semester, of course!
