ELA 11
Today we took the third reading quiz in short order and began reading more in the
Hunger Games. I've had some rumbling that we will not finish the book by year's end--and I guess that's a good complaint to have! I've never read a whole book aloud before and misjudged the time it would take. However, the book is a fantastic young adult novel (soon to be a movie!) and I told kids I hoped they'd finish it on their own over the summer. Tomorrow we just have a few loose ends to wrap up for the week and I think I'll read some more.

Movie posters for both films ... in Italian! |
With the test over and the seniors leaving, I'll spend the next few days watching two classic films:
Citizen Kane and
Casablanca. I was astounded several years ago to find that my students had little knowledge of some of the allusions to early movies--they were clueless when I mentioned "Rosebud" or "Bogey and Bacall". And because so many films are referenced in other works, I decided to incorporate a little cultural literacy. Even
The Simpsons and
Bugs Bunny refer to both films we'll watch. I've also given kids the list of the AFI's Top 100 Films for their summer viewing pleasure.
