This week saw us beginning our second novel, Lord of the Flies. Students had today to read independently (yesterday we read along with an audio recording of the novel). Tomorrow I'll let students decide how they need to spend their time--they will either read, work on study questions for Ch. 1-3 to prepare for Monday's quiz, or ... a little bit of both! Even though this is prom weekend, I am keeping our first reading check for Monday; kids will have had three class days for reading, as well as two week nights to "assign" themselves reading homework.
This is also a good time to suggest that students might want to consider finding an MP3 of Lord of the Flies to read along with--the public library or iTunes is a good place to start. Just be sure to get the unabridged version, so the story isn't shortened. I think this can be a valuable reading tool for students--especially if they read along.
AP Language
A shorter Socratic Seminar today and a quick reading check over our second reading assignment. Usually, the end of the year goes smoothly--when the AP testing starts next week our work load will lighten a bit; kids will have class time to read, as well as some computer lab time.
[I will be out on Friday for a meeting at KISD regarding our state's new Core Curriculum Standards.]
