Digging deeper

ELA 11
The hour began with students writing down in their Learning Logs any questions they might have over the reading; then we moved on to small group discussion to think about whether or not Beatty wanted to die and whether or not Montag was justified in killing him. Big ideas, to say the least. Students wrote down any questions they couldn't answer in their small group, and we tackled them as a whole class--unfortunately, few were asked. I assume this means that students are coming away with a good understanding of the novel?

Students also shared a quotation from the reading that they felt was significant in some way. This provided an opportunity to discuss the difference between reading at the literal level and reading in a deeper way. Some groups chose quotations that related only to the plot; others chose passages that led the reader to understand at a deeper level the novel's message. While both fulfilled the assignment, we obviously read for the latter reason.

Another day for reading and note-taking--digging deeper.
