Almost there--

ELA 11
First and 6th hours finished our ACT introduction today by looking at what the ACT writing test entails and how it is graded. I've looked over the students' first persuasive writes and everyone needs some refinements, some more than others. I will be talking to each student over the next week to give them my ACT baseline score for their writing and make some suggestions as to what they can do to improve.

Writing instruction is tricky--so many students simply type their thoughts, indent every once in a while, spell check, and call it good. Unfortunately, writing is a skill  Just as an athlete needs to drill to improve their skills, accepting the suggestions of the coach for improvement, writers also need to approach their work with the intention to perfect their skills. That takes time and thoughtfulness. I provide ample class time for writing assignments, but, unfortunately, it's not always time well-spent by the students. When you look at the grades for the last polished essay, keep in mind that from beginning to end, students had six hours to work on the essay.

Listening to Fowlin's dramatic presentation
Second hour was not held today due to the spectacular speaker we had at CPHS, Dr. Michael Fowlin. The assembly was powerful and moving.

AP Language
Computer lab day #2! Tomorrow the speech annotations are due for the semester exam project--my first official check up on how the students are doing.

Yearboook
I am in the process of returning spreads for further revision--students are working on their 2nd story assignments. Winter sports coverage is on the ladder for these next deadlines, and the snow we've had the last two days sure brings that home full force!
