Read! Read! Read!

This data, published on the Wing Institute's website, is telling--the more kids read, the better readers they become. I'm often asked what parents can do to help their teens become better readers. It seems as though the best answer might be simply, "Read"! Students who increase the number of pages they read show improvement in reading test scores, plain and simple.  In class we practice a number of reading strategies, we annotate Articles of the Week--it's our job as teachers to help kids with the more "technical" aspects of reading.

This year we'll dedicate each Thursday to Self Selected Reading. Some students still didn't have a book to read today--even though since day 1 I've had the assignment on the board, I've talked about it, and offered my classroom library for check outs. I do give points for reading and students will have an assignment at the end of the semester for their book. Maybe this weekend a trip to the library or the bookstore is in order for your teen?
