A skill to master

Students took a quiz on Act II today. After that, they had time to prepare for working with Act III. Namely, to define the vocab words and begin to read the Act independently before small group reading tomorrow.

I also spoke with students about re-writing their research papers and Works Cited pages. I've graded about half the essays and the scores were either As & Bs or Es. There wasn't a whole lot of middle ground. And what I noticed about the Es was that students simply didn't follow directions. They had a rubric from the get-go, reviewed the parts of an argument, and then appear to have disregarded it all. But as in all essays, the point is to improve one's writing, not simply to take a low score. Students will need to conference with me before re-writing and I'll do a bit of reteaching. I think it's quite accurate to say that any student with a D or and E (and maybe even a C?) is not on track for being college ready for this type of writing. You can help by encouraging your student to re-write this essay, because if they plan to go on after high school, it is imperative they master this skill.
