For the past two days we've done a bit of ACT review. I had student look closely at the questions to try to analyze why they were problematic. We noticed that some of the test-taking vocabulary was unfamiliar (and I added 4 new words to our Word Wall) and that the structure of some of the texts and/or the sentence structure could be confusing. I encourage students to visit www.actstudent.org to continue practicing on their own.
This semester we will continue to focus on annotating text and now we'll begin to add summarizing to our skill set. We looked at an example of good annotating and noted how it is so much easier to summarize if main ideas are accurate and supporting details are underlined. I encouraged the kids to stop and think as they underline and label main ideas--they got their annotations back from last week and many will note my comments that they need to read more carefully. This is a skill that will used in any post-secondary training, whether it's college or trade school.
