Today I conferenced with each student using the plan they created last Friday. This is our last computer lab day, so anything that needs to be word-processed after today will need to be done at home. Most students are making good progress--and some are nearly done with the text of their project. If they are on track, students should be able to put together their project next week in class; scheduled days for working are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
We were in the D wing computer lab today which is slow--the computers don't always work very efficiently. But I was surprised that kids were willing to put up with the s l o w load speed in Twitter, but felt quite justified closing out of their project file if the wait time to load was too long! Interestingly, in many research papers and oral arguments I read that students felt technology should be curtailed in school because chat and Facebook and Twitter were too tempting and they got off track. This is a great work place skill to learn, however--most employers frown on employees surfing the net and using social networks on company time even though most of our jobs require computer work. Another good example of school being an incubator for work place skills.
