Interestingly, the main characters of Fahrenheit 451, Montag and Faber, are named after a pencil company and a paper company. Students explained the significance of this in class--and also considered why Montag's first name was Guy. I read the closing pages of the book and students worked together to answer and discuss some inferential questions in their Learning Logs--good readers not only read the literal words on the page, but also add their own values and beliefs about life and human nature to make meaning. AP Language
Today I began conferencing with students one-on-one about their research drafts. I needed to see their complete narration and partition--some students are there; others, not. This weekend I will ask that they continue with several paragraphs of their confirmation--and I will collect these again on Monday. This should allow students who are lagging behind to catch up. After Monday, we will spend no class time on the essay, although students should hand them in a couple times before spring break to get feedback and critique.
