Wrapping up

ELA 11
We were finally able to spend some time with Fahrenheit 451 again today.  Small group discussion today focused on the following two questions: How did this world come about? and, What is the significance of the title of Part 2?  As before, students should have taken notes on this small group discussion in their Learning Logs, including page references. I also offered some time for general Q & A on the reading. By Monday students should have read through page 110 and be ready for a reading comprehension quiz.

All hours were able to spend time looking over the two ACT practice writes we did in class this year, one in November and one in February. Hopefully, students saw an improvement in their score since the prompt we did last week was post-instruction and ACT overview. Students completed a self-reflection about their writes, looking at their strengths and weaknesses.  Some students added questions at the bottom of their reflection and I will touch base with each of those students on Monday.
ACT tip for today ...
Don't let nerves get the best of you
You've worked hard—core classes have worked on practice tests and test-taking strategies. The best thing to do the evening before the test is to get a good night's sleep. You've covered the content and  perfected the skills. Now it's time to get in test mode -- calm, rested, and confident.

AP Language
Students were in the computer lab to begin searching for information about their tentative topic. I've also encouraged kids to run their topics by me for a thumbs up or thumbs down. (Because the essay is a classical argument, some topics just don't lend themselves well.) At this point, I hope they have partnered up with at least one other student to share resources--the best partner would be one who didn't necessarily share their point of view on the issue.
