Synthesize

Students were given an hour today to get deeper into the text. Their choices for reading were AOW 2.5, last Friday's research article, or Fahrenheit 451. Students have had three articles about technology, as well as the novel and should be starting to form a position on our guiding question Does technology help or hinder communication? I am expecting that research articles show evidence of close reading: underlined or highlighting and annotations. For hours 2 & 3 I collected the research article from last Friday. The grade I enter will indicate a student's close reading is either excellent (15), good (12), average (10), or poor (8); the grade might also indicate that the student did not work during class or at home, or did the annotations quickly and carelessly.

Groups are set and kids can begin to brainstorm and think together about the issue and their oral arguments. I showed and posted a link of experts testifying on a senate panel to give students some idea of the PBL's format.
