ELA 11
Our two-hour delay meant that first hour did not meet today; consequently, I will adjust the draft paragraphs due for them tomorrow. In 2nd and 6th hours I encouraged students to use their research packet as a resource--many of the research skills (note-taking, parenthetical citations, thesis statements, etc.) are reviewed, but not taught at any great length because students had detailed instruction in 9th and 10th grade; 11th grade curriculum builds on that instruction. (Of course, if a student is new to CPHS, I can give more individualized instruction.) Students then had some time to continue drafting. Drafted paragraphs by hour: 1st hour = 3 par.; 2nd hour = 4 par.; 6th hour = 5 par.
The ELA 11 exam is a skills test. In part I, students will read a passage and catch proofreading errors and identify elements of good writing. In part II, students will read a non-fiction passage and answer reading comprehension questions. This semester our focus was the qualities of good writing; we also read non-fiction and practiced reading strategies for understanding. The exam is worth 50 assessment points.

Staffers were in the lab today to continue revising their spreads for an exam grade--I conferenced with several students; this is 50 points of their exam. Thursday's in-class write will be a self-critique--this is 25 points of the exam grade.
